Villa Carlotta is the most famous public villa of Lake Como, in particular for its centuries-old 70,000sqm botanical gardens. It is at only 5 minute walk from the Grand Hotel Tremezzo.
It is a beautiful Baroque building dating back to the beginning of the XVIIIth century, on a hill bordering the park of the Grand Hotel Tremezzo.
It was built, as a summer home, by Marquis Giorgio Clerici, an important gentleman from the Spanish and Austrian Milan. He decorated it through some magnificent ceilings in Lombard Baroque style, through an Italian style garden, the stairways, the balustrades, the fountains and the midgets cascade.
In 1795 it was sold to Gian Battista Sommariva, who brought it to its full splendour updating it with important pieces of art, such as the famous statues by Canova. In 1843 the Villa was purchased by Princess Marianne of Nassau, Prince Albert of Prussia's wife, who gave it to her daughter Carlotta on her marriage to Grand Duke George of Sax-Meiningen.
Lady Carlotta devoted much attention to the gardens and created a luxuriant Italian-style garden, well known and appreciated all over the world, where, thanks to the mild climate of the Lake, you can admire a rich botanic patrimony, which exceeds 500 varieties. Inside the Villa you can admire "Amore e Psiche" by Canova and other art pieces by Thorvaldsen, Hayez and by other Masters from the XIXth Century.
Opening: March-November, 7 days a week.
