For love
of the lake
A new vision for Italian hospitality, born between two great centuries.
Once upon a Belle Epoque time, Tremezzo was the new place to be; and the Grand Hotel Tremezzo was its address to know
A bold new century, a bright new spirit of invention
Bellagio, 1910. Across the waters of Lake Como, the tranquil fishing village of Tremezzo can just be seen.
Enea and Maria Gandola—he descended from a patrician family, she from renowned artist-intellectuals—leave their Bellagio home to settle here, bringing with them three young children, a refined world view, and a daring vision. They had travelled the breadth of the Continent, experiencing its most beautlful and celebrated hotels; then watched as their beloved centro lago was discovered by Europe’s most illustrious families—lured by its pristine air, the mountain vistas, the charming locals, and above all the cerulean lake itself.
Enea e Maria saw an opportunity; but more than this, they fostered a dream: to build a luxury hotel that would compete with the finest in the world. Something to put Lake Como on the international map; something new, and very Grand, indeed.
The making of a destination
No expense was spared in blending the height of the day’s Art Nouveau styles with the latest technical innovations. Soaring ceilings and ornate balconies captured the spirit of the fine ottocento; elevators—not one but two—and an electric sign spelling out the hotel's name added dazzle. Nobility and celebrities made the Grand Hotel di Tremezzo their residence, for a week or a summer season. It was the age of refined pleasures—laughter under parasols, revelry late into the lantern-lit evenings.
A woman's place is in the Grand Hotel
The story of the Grand Hotel Tremezzo is an Italian one, and a family one; but in a sense, it’s most profoundly a story of women—the women who have imbued our hotel with both its inimitable style and its signature warm, cultured welcome. Generations of owners, who invested their talents and spirits; later luminaries, like Garbo, who left unmissable traces of glamour, femininity and bygone-era charm. Their presences resonate to this day; in the grace of our gardens and salons, in the abundant willingness of our staff to grant wishes and elicit joy, in the elegance strength of our character, unique—and uniquely beautiful— in Lake Como.
Past meeting future: a tribute to a grand European age, and a beacon for the innovation that followed
More than 60 years later, the hotel was acquired by a new family, still its owners today. A new name; a new generation to embrace and cultivate its potential for the next century. Today, under their aegis, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo is a place where tradition and glamour play happily with a contemporary spirit of independence, and where the welcome is stylish, warm, genuine—and always feels like coming home to family.
